Call for Applications: EM:IP Visuals Editor
Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice (EM:IP) is seeking a colleague to serve as visuals editor for a two-year term. The primary responsibility of the visuals editor is leading the journal’s annual Cover Graphic/Data Visualization Competition. Apply by Monday, August 17, 2026.

About the Competition
The EM:IP Cover Graphic/Data Visualization Competition invites members of the National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME) to submit creative visualizations that communicate clear, concise, and meaningful insights about educational or psychological data. Winning submissions are featured on EM:IP’s online covers and help showcase innovative approaches to communicating data and measurement concepts in practice.
Role of the Visuals Editor
The visuals editor will:
- Lead and manage the annual Cover Graphic/Data Visualization Competition
- Coordinate the call for submissions and outreach to the NCME community
- Organize and facilitate the review process with editorial board members
- Oversee selection of winning submissions
- Write a brief editorial to accompany each online issue’s cover graphic, ensuring submission aligns with the journal’s publication schedule
- Help shape the competition’s direction, criteria, and visibility going forward
Vision for the Role
We are looking for a colleague who shares EM:IP’s commitment to communicating measurement ideas through clear, thoughtful, and innovative visuals. The next visuals editor will play a key role in:
- Continuing and strengthening the competition’s tradition of highlighting high-quality, practice-relevant data visualizations
- Expanding participation and reach, including encouraging new contributors and perspectives
- Helping usher in a new era of visual communication in educational measurement—one that reflects advances in data science, design, and accessibility
Ideal Qualifications
- Interest in data visualization, score reporting, or communication of measurement concepts
- Experience with or appreciation for translating complex analyses into accessible visuals
- Strong organizational and collaborative skills
- Familiarity with EM:IP and the NCME community
Time Commitment
The position is a two-year term with an opportunity to extend. The role is cyclical, with the primary workload concentrated around:
- Announcement and promotion of the competition
- Submission review and coordination
- Final selection and communication of results
- Editorial write-ups for quarterly online issues
