SUMMARY:In Conversation with Jeremy Roschelle: Learning Analytics\, Measurement\, and the Search for What Counts as Evidence
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the Artificial Intelligence in Measurement & Education SIGIMIE. \n\n\n\nThis session is a conversation with Jeremy Roschelle\, Executive Director of Learning Sciences Research at Digital Promise\, exploring the increasingly blurred boundary between learning analytics\, psychometric measurement\, and AI. Jeremy has a background in learning sciences and research on technology in STEM learning. He’s been increasingly focused on infrastructure for research (leveraging digital learning platforms) and for AI (recruiting educational public goods). Central tensions that emerge in this work include: can the platforms that students really use ever generate data we can trust? can the constructs we can measure in controlled situations be deployed “in the wild” in everyday platforms? How can the strengths of the psychometric community with regard to topics like fairness and validity connect with needs in the AI community for datasets\, models\, and benchmarks? Underlying these tensions is a driving question that Roschelle has struggled with throughout his career: how can intellectual rigor and large-scale impact be better connected? \n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\nThis session experiments with a format that breaks from the traditional webinar mold. We’d love your active participation either by raising your hand live in the Zoom meeting\, or submitting a question ahead of time using the form below. \n\n\n\nSubmit a Question

SUMMARY:Comparing and Evaluating Universal Early Reading Screeners and Their Uses in the U.S. Educational System
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the Contemporary Issues in Scaling\, Linking & Equating and the State & Local Assessment Leaders SIGIMIEs. \n\n\n\nIn U.S. schooling\, there is an increasing interest in early assessment and intervention of students with potential academic difficulties. As of 2025\, at least 29 states and the District of Columbia have legislative requirements for student screening in early grades. Schools and districts are addressing these interests and requirements with universal screeners to identify students and allocate educational resources and support.Screening measures are designed as indicators of the need for further evaluation. They tend to have fewer items and take less time to administer than other summative assessments. Many universal reading screeners are available\, and they can differ widely in their assessment approaches. Several states have conducted comparative studies of the psychometric quality of multiple screeners to ensure those screeners are appropriate for their context and planned interpretation and use. This presentation will describe insights from a recent review of early reading screeners commissioned by a state department of education. The presentation will discuss considerations for universal screeners\, including their intended purposes\, populations\, and interpretations and uses; the fundamental skills they cover; and other overlooked issues\, such as comparability limitations that can arise in test development\, administration\, and scoring. We will conclude by providing a set of questions for state personnel and other users of universal academics creeners to consider when selecting screening measures. \n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenters\n\n\n\n\nTim Moses & Jessica Jonson\, Buros Center for Testing\n\n\n\nRyan J. SUMMARY:Predicting Item Survival from Authoring to Use on Live Exams
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the AIME SIGIMIE. \n\n\n\nEvery item that enters the development process requires an investment of author time\, editorial review\, committee discussion\, and psychometric evaluation. As such\, item development can be framed as a resource allocation problem\, where costs accumulate throughout the process. Using multiple-choice questions from a veterinary licensure exam\, this study aims to automatically predict whether an item will ultimately be approved for live use\, or “survive”. A staged modeling framework was implemented\, incrementally incorporating feature families from initial authoring to post-pretest psychometrics\, to determine when predictive signal emerged in the development process. Results showed that item survival could be predicted early in the process\, using features available for a newly developed item\, and model performance improved as additional information was incorporated across subsequent stages. Overall\, item survival modeling can be used as a risk-screening tool that helps to prioritize review efforts\, identify patterns\, and provide targeted support to authors. \n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\n\n\nSydney Peters

SUMMARY:Understanding the Content Development Cycle … Or Why Item Development Costs So Much Time & Money
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the Large-Scale Assessment SIGIMIE. \n\n\n\nIt takes 18 to 30 months to develop content for a high-quality\, large-scale assessment—even after the test design is finalized. Furthermore\, test development teams are constantly juggling three overlapping development cycles at any given time\, interconnected through linked operational and field testing. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, Marjorie Wine will guide you through the core content development cycle—a process that remains remarkably consistent across assessments. From its six major stages (plus field and operational testing) to its dozens of intricate sub-steps\, you will gain an insider’s view of the complex processes led by Content Development Professionals (CDPs) and discover how their work provides the foundational evidence supporting an assessment’s validity argument. \n\n\n\nWebinar Agenda & Format\n\n\n\n\nPresentation (60 mins): A step-by-step breakdown of the content development cycle\, overlapping operational/field testing phases\, and cost/time drivers.\n\n\n\nDiscussion & Q&A (Up to 30 mins): An interactive session to answer your questions and discuss real-world applications with the speaker.\n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\n\nMarjorie Wine has worked in content development in large scale assessment—the development of items and instruments—for over 20 years. She has worked at virtually every major test development organization in the country and has worked both client-side and vendor-side. Marjorie has risen from entry-level content development professional to overseeing all content development (i.e.\, including ELA\, math\, science and social studies) for multiple national assessments\, and has contributed to state tests from Massachusetts to Hawaii—and many states in between.

SUMMARY:Teaching and Learning Measurement in the Age of AI: Metacognition\, Evaluation\, and Exercises
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the Training and Professional Development Committee. \n\n\n\nLarge language models make difficult work easy\, which means the learning in a measurement course now emphasizes the work a model cannot do for the learner. This session presents a method for teaching and learning educational measurement with AI\, built on two habits: attending to the model’s reasoning as well as one’s own in terms of metacognition and executive function\, since every answer rests on silent inferences about the learner’s goal and about the standard of good practice that applies to it; and attention to the popular misconceptions and salient misunderstandings that these models have uncritically learned from the broad literature and now reproduce with confidence. Participants will see example exercises that put these habits to work — coding collaboratively with a model on a measurement problem\, casting the model as “Reviewer 2” against a classic paper\, tracing how a foundational study’s ideas grew or were left behind\, and testing a claimed gap through simulation — and will learn to write their own AI skills: short\, reusable instructions for LLMs that fix the model’s goal\, standard\, and procedure in advance\, so that executive control of the task stays with the learner rather than passing to the model. \n\n\n\nParticipants will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nIdentify the two inferences a language model makes before answering a measurement question\, and evaluate both alongside the answer itself.\n\n\n\nAnticipate the measurement topics on which AI has uncritically learned the field’s popular misconceptions\, and check its answers against what the discipline can actually defend.\n\n\n\nAdapt classroom exercises — collaborative coding\, adversarial review\, conceptual tracing\, and simulation — that use AI to build understanding of measurement rather than to bypass it.\n\n\n\nDraft a reusable AI skill that specifies a goal\, a standard\, and a procedure\, so that the learner sets the terms of the task in advance.\n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\n\nJoseph H. Grochowalski\, PhD\, is a Senior Psychometrician at the College Board whose work includes measurement validity\, test security\, standard setting\, machine cognition in AI-based scoring\, and the assessment of durable skills. He is an adjunct professor at Teachers College\, Columbia University\, and New York University\, and he consults medical schools with a focus on novel measures of interaction-based skills. SUMMARY:A Computational Psychometrics Ecosystem for Large-Scale Language Assessment: Integrating Measurement\, Artificial Intelligence\, and Governance
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the Large-Scale Assessments SIGIMIE. \n\n\n\nLarge-scale language assessments increasingly rely on digital platforms that generate extensive linguistic\, behavioural\, and operational data. These data create opportunities to improve assessment design\, scoring\, delivery\, security\, and reporting\, but they also introduce significant measurement challenges. Computational applications are often implemented as separate technical solutions\, making it difficult to determine whether improvements in efficiency or predictive accuracy strengthen the validity of score interpretations and uses—or introduce construct-irrelevant variance\, subgroup differences\, model drift\, and new threats to fairness and comparability. \n\n\n\nThis webinar presents the Computational Psychometrics Ecosystem (CPE)\, an integrative framework for embedding computational methods within established psychometric principles across the lifecycle of large-scale language assessment. The framework comprises six interconnected layers: (1) Measurement Foundations\, including construct definition\, validity\, reliability\, fairness\, and psychometric modelling; (2) Multimodal Data\, encompassing item responses\, response times\, speech\, writing\, and process data; (3) Computational Methods\, including artificial intelligence\, machine learning\, natural language processing\, Bayesian modelling\, and simulation; (4) Assessment Applications\, including automated item generation\, adaptive and multistage testing\, automated scoring\, cognitive diagnosis\, and test-security analysis; (5) Operational Intelligence\, including quality assurance\, anomaly detection\, model monitoring\, predictive analytics\, and decision support; and (6) Governance\, encompassing transparency\, explainability\, privacy\, accountability\, auditability\, and human oversight. \n\n\n\nWithin the CPE\, computational performance is not treated as sufficient evidence of measurement quality. Instead\, each application is evaluated in relation to its intended contribution to the assessment’s validity argument. Operational illustrations from large-scale language assessment are used to identify relevant evidence requirements\, including construct and content representation\, item calibration\, linking and equating\, subgroup performance\, measurement invariance\, human–machine agreement\, classification consistency\, model drift\, uncertainty\, and the consequences of automated decisions. \n\n\n\nThe framework demonstrates how computational psychometrics can extend—rather than replace—Classical Test Theory\, Item Response Theory\, Generalizability Theory\, and Many-Facet Rasch Measurement. It also provides a structure for investigating how innovations affect score comparability\, fairness\, security\, and the appropriate interpretation and use of assessment results. The CPE offers researchers and assessment organisations a common basis for designing\, evaluating\, monitoring\, and governing AI-enabled language assessments while preserving the scientific and ethical foundations of large-scale educational measurement. \n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Ardeshir Geranpayeh is an assessment and educational technology specialist with more than three decades of experience in psychometrics\, high-stakes testing\, and automated assessment. SUMMARY:Share Your Perspective on Assessment Peer Review: NCME Member Feedback Session with CCSSO
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the Committee on Informing Assessment Policy. \n\n\n\nNCME’ Committee on Informing Assessment Policy is pleased to co-host a virtual feedback session with the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO)\, led by Ben Erwin\, CCSSO’s Director of Assessment and Accountability. CCSSO has been working with state assessment directors\, national experts\, and the U.S. Department of Education to explore key considerations for updating the current assessment peer review guidance. As part of this effort\, CCSSO is partnering with the Center for Assessment and NCME to facilitate a series of conversations across the field. \n\n\n\nThis session is designed specifically for NCME members. It is an opportunity to share your experiences with the peer review process and to offer input on the recommendations for change that CCSSO is currently drafting. Whether you have supported states through peer review\, served as a reviewer\, worked on the technical documentation behind a submission\, or studied the process from a research perspective\, your insights will help shape guidance that affects assessment systems nationwide. We encourage all NCME members to join and weigh in on this important and timely issue. \n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n\n\nThis feedback session will be led by Ben Erwin\, CCSSO’s Director of Assessment and Accountability.
