SUMMARY:Teaching and Learning Measurement in the Age of AI: Metacognition\, Evaluation\, and Exercises
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the Training and Professional Development Committee.  \n\n\n\nLarge language models make difficult work easy\, which means the learning in a measurement course now emphasizes the work a model cannot do for the learner. This session presents a method for teaching and learning educational measurement with AI\, built on two habits: attending to the model’s reasoning as well as one’s own in terms of metacognition and executive function\, since every answer rests on silent inferences about the learner’s goal and about the standard of good practice that applies to it; and attention to the popular misconceptions and salient misunderstandings that these models have uncritically learned from the broad literature and now reproduce with confidence. Participants will see example exercises that put these habits to work — coding collaboratively with a model on a measurement problem\, casting the model as “Reviewer 2” against a classic paper\, tracing how a foundational study’s ideas grew or were left behind\, and testing a claimed gap through simulation — and will learn to write their own AI skills: short\, reusable instructions for LLMs that fix the model’s goal\, standard\, and procedure in advance\, so that executive control of the task stays with the learner rather than passing to the model. \n\n\n\nParticipants will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nIdentify the two inferences a language model makes before answering a measurement question\, and evaluate both alongside the answer itself.\n\n\n\nAnticipate the measurement topics on which AI has uncritically learned the field’s popular misconceptions\, and check its answers against what the discipline can actually defend.\n\n\n\nAdapt classroom exercises — collaborative coding\, adversarial review\, conceptual tracing\, and simulation — that use AI to build understanding of measurement rather than to bypass it.\n\n\n\nDraft a reusable AI skill that specifies a goal\, a standard\, and a procedure\, so that the learner sets the terms of the task in advance.\n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\n\nJoseph H. Grochowalski\, PhD\, is a Senior Psychometrician at the College Board whose work includes measurement validity\, test security\, standard setting\, machine cognition in AI-based scoring\, and the assessment of durable skills. He is an adjunct professor at Teachers College\, Columbia University\, and New York University\, and he consults medical schools with a focus on novel measures of interaction-based skills. SUMMARY:Predicting Item Survival from Authoring to Use on Live Exams
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the AIME SIGIMIE. \n\n\n\nEvery item that enters the development process requires an investment of author time\, editorial review\, committee discussion\, and psychometric evaluation. As such\, item development can be framed as a resource allocation problem\, where costs accumulate throughout the process. Using multiple-choice questions from a veterinary licensure exam\, this study aims to automatically predict whether an item will ultimately be approved for live use\, or “survive”. A staged modeling framework was implemented\, incrementally incorporating feature families from initial authoring to post-pretest psychometrics\, to determine when predictive signal emerged in the development process. Results showed that item survival could be predicted early in the process\, using features available for a newly developed item\, and model performance improved as additional information was incorporated across subsequent stages. SUMMARY:Comparing and Evaluating Universal Early Reading Screeners and Their Uses in the U.S. Educational System
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the Contemporary Issues in Scaling\, Linking & Equating and the State & Local Assessment Leaders SIGIMIEs. \n\n\n\nIn U.S. schooling\, there is an increasing interest in early assessment and intervention of students with potential academic difficulties. As of 2025\, at least 29 states and the District of Columbia have legislative requirements for student screening in early grades. Schools and districts are addressing these interests and requirements with universal screeners to identify students and allocate educational resources and support.Screening measures are designed as indicators of the need for further evaluation. They tend to have fewer items and take less time to administer than other summative assessments. Many universal reading screeners are available\, and they can differ widely in their assessment approaches. Several states have conducted comparative studies of the psychometric quality of multiple screeners to ensure those screeners are appropriate for their context and planned interpretation and use. This presentation will describe insights from a recent review of early reading screeners commissioned by a state department of education. The presentation will discuss considerations for universal screeners\, including their intended purposes\, populations\, and interpretations and uses; the fundamental skills they cover; and other overlooked issues\, such as comparability limitations that can arise in test development\, administration\, and scoring. SUMMARY:Key Trends in Educational Assessment: How Past Shapes Future
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the Inclusive Measurement for Historical Marginalized Group (IMHM) SIGIMIE. \n\n\n\nIn the United States\, educational assessment is in some instances changing rapidly and dramatically. Change is occurring along several dimensions\, one of which is how we think about fairness. Evolving conceptions of that concept are in part leading to a decline in the use of standardized tests for postsecondary admissions and also to the rise of personalized assessment. This paper traces significant events affecting the conception of fairness\, describes the decline of standardized postsecondary admissions testing\, and briefly summarizes personalized assessment. Understanding these three trends should help in planning strategically for an uncertain future. \n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\nPresenter\n\n\n\n\n\nRandy Bennett is principal with Assessment Innovation Matters\, which provides consultation in assessment innovation and assessment research. He is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Education and a fellow of the American Educational Research Association\, as well as a recipient of the AERA E. F. Lindquist Award\, the AERA Cognition and Assessment SIG Significant Contribution to Research in Assessment and Cognition Award\, and the NCME Bradley Hanson Contributions to Educational Measurement Award (with H. Guo\, M. Zhang\, & P. Deane). From 2010 to 2025\, he was the Norman O. Frederiksen Chair in Assessment Innovation at ETS in Princeton\, New Jersey. His work concentrates on personalizing assessment\, fairness\, and equity.

SUMMARY:Beyond Additional Human Scores: Automated Scoring Reliability Estimation in ILSAs
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the Artificial Intelligence in Measurement and Education SIGIMIE.  \n\n\n\nPresenter: Jenny (Ji Yoon) Jung\, TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center \n\n\n\nScoring reliability has traditionally depended on inter-rater agreement\, which requires additional human scores that are costly\, time-consuming\, and vulnerable to rater effects. These challenges are especially amplified in international large-scale assessments (ILSAs)\, which involve massive volumes of multilingual responses across more than 60 countries. To address this\, we propose the Linguistic-integrated Reliability Audit (LiRA)\, a novel framework that automatically generates data-driven benchmark scores without requiring additional human raters. Applying LiRA to the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS)\, we estimated cross-country scoring reliability (CCSR) at the item\, country\, and language levels. This approach offers significantly broader coverage than conventional CCSR methods\, which rely on small subsets of English-language responses. Furthermore\, LiRA enables direct\, human-score-independent comparisons between human and AI scoring reliability. Our findings position LiRA as a scalable and reproducible framework for scoring reliability estimation in ILSAs. \n\n\n\nRegister Now
