SUMMARY:Aligning AI with Assessment Standards: A Case Study of Evaluating AI-Generated Reading Passages for NAEP
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the Large-Scale Assessment SIGIMIE. \n\n\n\nThe on-going revision of the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing has drawn significant attention\, particularly in the context of leveraging AI techniques in today’s digital environment. A central question is whether AI can measure up to standards\, and how AI and humans can collaborate effectively to advance assessment operations in test design\, administration\, scoring\, and reporting while upholding the essential principles of assessment in reliability\, validity and fairness. This talk will provide an overview of the key elements of AI that can be leveraged within the standards\, followed by a case study to illustrate these ideas in practice. Specifically\, the case study introduces a framework for evaluating the difficulty alignment of reading passages when AI is used to automatically generate tasks for NAEP across different grade levels. It also examines the effects of generating passages with varying concepts\, such as fiction and non-fiction\, to highlight both opportunities and challenges in applying AI to educational measurement. \n\n\n\nThis session will be led by Qiwei He\, Georgetown University. \n\n\n\nRSVP Now

SUMMARY:When Language Models Model Items and Examinees: Methodological Considerations for Evaluation
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the Artificial Intelligence in Measurement and Education SIGIMIE. \n\n\n\nPre-trained language models (LMs) are opening new avenues for modeling and predicting the psychometric properties of assessment items. These advances offer promising innovations—but also introduce unique challenges when traditional evaluation methods are applied in novel AI-based contexts. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, Dr. Ikkyu Choi (ETS) will explore key methodological considerations for evaluating LM-based approaches\, with a focus on scenarios involving limited or no human response data\, large item pools\, and real-time operational use. The presentation will highlight three central components: \n\n\n\n\nScaling predicted item parameters\n\n\n\nIdentifying and addressing edge cases\n\n\n\nEstablishing evaluation criteria for generated samples\n\n\n\n\nDrawing on multiple studies\, Dr. Choi will share practical examples\, potential solutions\, and open questions that continue to shape this emerging field \n\n\n\nRegister Now

SUMMARY:AIME SIGIMIE Speaker Series: Predicting Item Difficulty for Pretest Items in Large-Scale Assessments
DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the AIME SIGIMIE. \n\n\n\nPretesting items in large-scale assessments requires substantial time\, resources\, and financial investment. Accurately predicting item difficulty before any administration can streamline pretesting\, reduce costs\, and provide earlier feedback to item writers\, supporting targeted revisions that better align with intended difficulty. Effective difficulty prediction methods\, therefore\, have the potential to improve both efficiency and quality in item development and pool management. \n\n\n\nIn this study\, we evaluate a two-step hybrid framework for predicting the IRT-based difficulty of pretest items in large scale literacy assessments. First\, we fine tune transformer-based models on item text under multiple input configurations that vary the inclusion of stimuli\, stems\, options\, and associated skills. Second\, we feed transformer predictions\, together with handcrafted linguistic features\, into traditional machine learning models. Using real world pretest data\, we then examine the gains over the baseline model that only uses linguistic features\, the differences among transformer models\, and the contribution of each input source. Our results indicate that hybrid models consistently improve predictive accuracy while maintaining interpretability\, offering a practical companion tool for large scale assessment programs. \n\n\n\nRSVP\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\n\n\nYoungKoung Kim (College Board)\n\n\n\n\nMeeting Details\n\n\n\nhttps://umn.zoom.us/j/98791553326?pwd=TojUjPWwpzw7RaZ6Lc9UzWiAgyX3J3.1Meeting ID: 987 9155 3326 Passcode: 3HkRqw

SUMMARY:Principles and Practices in Recently Established Score Scales for Medical Achievement Tests
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is from the Scaling\, Linking\, and Equating SIGIMIE. \n\n\n\nReporting scales are one of the most visible and widely used parts of a testing program. Many different criteria and methods can influence how they are designed\, sometimes in competing ways. The key is to bring principles and practices together—so the scales not only support valid score interpretations and uses\, but also help prevent misinterpretations and misuses. In this presentation\, we share how we integrated principles with practical decisions when establishing reporting scales for a battery of medical achievement tests. We’ll talk about the program’s purpose\, methodologies conducted\, challenges encountered\, and show how aligning principles with practice shaped the design and implementation of the scales. \n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nJinghua Liu (jliu@nbome.org)
